Techniques to Enhance Academic and Social Language Functions for ENL Students

$220.00$240.00

ENL students are faced with learning both social and academic language in a school setting. These 2 language needs serve different functions, and how to teach them varies greatly. BICS or Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills is the language necessary for informal conversations, such as conversations with friends and day-to-day interactions. CALPS or Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency is required to understand content based material and content in the classroom. There are different methods and practices to enhance these skills. Throughout this course you will understand when and how to foster social language opportunities to aid ENL students, as well as how to enhance academic understanding through content based vocabulary.

This course is applicable to all educators, administrators, and any related service providers of all subjects, grades K-12.

45 hours / 3 credits in-service and graduate credits.
