How to Support the Dyslexic Student

$220.00$465.00

Dyslexia is complex. Dyslexia is a language-based learning disorder. Contrary to popular belief, the core indicator of dyslexia is not simply reversing letters. It affects the organization in the brain that controls the ability to process the way language is heard, spoken, read, or spelled. Dyslexia can also manifest in difficulties with working memory, attention, and organization.  Regardless of how much you know about dyslexia, it can be frightening to figure out  how to best educate students who have dyslexia.

In this course, you will learn to identify dyslexia’s impact on your students’ oral language, reading, and writing, and you’ll develop specific strategies for how to support students in these areas. You’ll also learn the early signs of dyslexia and specific accommodations that can help these students. You will learn a background and establish an overall empathy towards the disability. Educators taking this class will study the strengths of dyslexia and common myths that are often misunderstood. You will navigate specific assistive technological tools to better assist your dyslexic students. . Although many students who have dyslexia struggle academically due to their disability, they also struggle socially and emotionally due to the impacts of the disability. You will become sensitive to their needs and help guide them to overall success.

This class is suitable for all k-12 educators and service providers.
