Linguists today focus on a few key approaches to literacy development, specifically for English Language Learners. Some approaches to teaching literacy include the Skills Based Approach, the Whole Language Approach, and the Language Experience Approach. Throughout this course we will review the most common approaches to literacy learning, the benefits and drawbacks to each approach, and the stages of literacy development. We will also review the best practices to develop literacy with confidence, and how to promote literacy development using the classroom environment.

This course is applicable to all educators, administrators, and any related service providers of all subjects, grades K-12.

45 hours / 3 credits in-service and graduate credits.
